In 1962, I made my first dives in the underwater world
of the Florida Keys . I was hooked for life. Being a
Kansas farm boy, the water world revolved around muddy
lakes, with no diving opportunities. There still was
lots of snorkeling in those Kansas lakes.
Driving the tractor in the fields of central Kansas ,
gave lots of time to watch nature and observe. I always
wanted to fly like the hawks. Diving did provide that
opportunity to fly, but in the underwater world. I do
fly when I dive.
Diving was rekindled after years of mountain
climbing, hiking and working with youth. In 1992, I did
become certified, and the adventure of flying though the
water was back!
Since 1992, I have been taking Kansas students to the
undersea world and teaching coral reef ecology. The
experiences have been great, whether in the Atlantic ,
Pacific, Sea of Cortez , Aegean , or the Caribbean Sea .
I have also had a desire to be further trained, not only
to be a better diver, but also a better buddy. I will
always have that leader and teacher in me that is
wanting to come out, even though I retired from
classroom science teaching in 2005.
